Frequently asked questions
What is MEK used for?
MEK is used to thin industrial maintenance coatings, dissolve resins, contact cement and adhesives, and clean and degrease fiberglass repair tools. It also thins acrylics, lacquers, epoxies and fiberglass resins.
What's the difference between MEK and acetone?
Both are fast, strong ketone solvents. MEK evaporates a little more slowly than acetone, which gives you slightly more working time when thinning coatings or cleaning tools.
Will MEK damage plastic or paint?
It can. MEK softens or dissolves many plastics, rubbers and painted finishes. Test on a small, hidden area first.
Which size should I buy?
The 946 mL quart suits occasional cleanup, the 3.78 L gallon suits regular use, and the 18.9 L pail is the best value for shops and fiberglass work.
Is MEK safe to use indoors?
MEK is highly flammable and its vapours are harmful. Use it only with good ventilation, away from heat, sparks and flame, and wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Read the SDS before use. Request the SDS.
