Rexall Solutions Methyl Hydrate is methanol (methyl alcohol), a versatile alcohol solvent with many cleaning, thinning and fuel uses. It cleans brushes used with shellac, dissolves gums, resins and celluloid, and burns smoke-free as a fuel for fondue sets and unpressurized marine alcohol stoves. Its low freezing point also makes it useful for many de-icing jobs.

  • Cleans shellac brushes and tools
  • Dissolves gums, resins and celluloid
  • Fuel for fondue sets and unpressurized marine alcohol stoves; burns smoke-free
  • Low freezing point for de-icing applications

Directions for use as fuel: Fill the appliance away from heat or open flame. Never refill while the appliance is warm. Do not use to start fires.

Sizes: 1 Qt (946 mL), 1 Gal (3.78 L) and 5 Gal (18.9 L). Made in Canada.

DANGER: Highly flammable liquid and vapour. Toxic if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin, and can cause blindness or death. Frequently asked questions

Is methyl hydrate the same as methanol?

Yes. Methyl hydrate is the common Canadian name for methanol, also called methyl alcohol or wood alcohol.

Methyl hydrate vs. denatured alcohol: what's the difference?

Methyl hydrate is methanol. Denatured alcohol is mostly ethanol (ours is 85% ethanol and 15% methanol). Both clean up shellac. Methyl hydrate is the usual choice for alcohol stove fuel and de-icing.

Can I use methyl hydrate as fondue or alcohol stove fuel?

Yes, in fondue sets and unpressurized marine alcohol stoves. Fill away from heat and flame, never refill while the appliance is warm, and never use it to start fires. A methanol flame can be very hard to see in daylight, so treat the appliance as lit until it has cooled.

What can I use it to clean or dissolve?

Shellac brushes and tools, gums, resins and celluloid. Test on a small, hidden area first, because it can soften some finishes and plastics.

Is methyl hydrate poisonous?

Yes. Methanol is toxic if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin, and swallowing even a small amount can cause blindness or death. Never put it in food or drink containers, store it out of reach of children, and if someone is exposed call 911 or Poison Control right away.

Which size should I buy?

The 946 mL quart suits fondue and occasional use, the 3.78 L gallon suits regular use, and the 18.9 L pail suits shops and high-volume users.
